Senior Pet Health Check-up: 10 Critical Steps

Buddy is a 12-year-old Cocker Spaniel. Last year’s playful runs have been replaced by long siestas facing the sun. Owner Ayşe explains this as “getting old” — but aging is not a disease, just a period that needs care. Postponing senior pet health checks with “why go if nothing’s wrong” is fastest way to face a serious situation six months later. Here are 10 critical steps in annual full check-up of an old pet like Buddy.

1Complete blood count and biochemistry panel.

The most important screening tool for older pets is blood test. Anemia, infection signs, kidney values (BUN, creatinine), liver enzymes, sugar, electrolyte balance — many invisible problems emerge here. In Turkey 2026, full panel between 1,000-1,800 TL. Doing it twice a year significantly increases chance of catching kidney failure or diabetes early. Discuss results one by one with vet, “normal range” expression can be misleading.

2Urinalysis.

Kidney problems appear in urine before blood tests. Density, protein, blood, sugar, crystals — these values read in five minutes with urine stick are as valuable as blood for senior pet. Urinary tract infections especially common in older females, may not show symptoms. Ideally take morning’s first urine in clean lidded jar before vet and bring within 2 hours; but sample taken at clinic also works.

3Heart auscultation and echocardiography if needed.

Heart problems common in older dogs and cats. Vet first catches murmur with stethoscope; for further examination echo (heart ultrasound) needed. Cardiomyopathy risk especially high in dogs like Cavalier King Charles, Boxer, Doberman and cats like Ragdoll, Maine Coon. Echo in 1,500-2,500 TL range, life-saving. If you’ve observed coughing, easy fatigue, tongue purpling, definitely.

4Eye examination.

Cataracts, retinal atrophy, glaucoma — all come stealthily with age. Owner usually notices when “hits walls,” “can’t see at night”; whereas vet can detect much earlier with basic eye examination. Intraocular pressure measurement, fundus check should be part of standard control. Cataracts in canine diabetes can develop within months, can be corrected by surgery — but it’s a race against time.

5Dental and oral examination.

Vast majority of pets over 8 have periodontal disease. Tartar is not just an aesthetic matter, but a bacterial source reaching heart and kidneys. Dental cleaning under anesthesia between 2,500-5,000 TL, should be done annually or biennially in suitable pets. Bad breath, drooling while eating, chewing on one side, gum bleeding — all flags.

6Thyroid function test.

Hyperthyroidism in older cats, hypothyroidism in older dogs are very common. Weight changes (cats lose weight, dogs gain), appetite disturbances, behavior changes are typical flags. T4 and TSH tests requested with biochemistry panel or separately, around 400-700 TL. Drug treatment is cheap and very effective; uncaught thyroid disease quickly wears down heart and kidneys.

7Joint and movement examination.

Osteoarthritis is the most common hidden pain source in older pets. Dog may not be “lazy” but actually in pain. Vet evaluates each joint individually, checks range of motion, pain response. X-ray taken if needed. Glucosamine-chondroitin supplement, joint mat, weight control, new generation pain medications (e.g., monoclonal antibodies) are literally rebuilding life quality.

8Abdominal examination and ultrasonography.

Spleen tumors, liver nodules, kidney cysts, bladder stones — none of these are visible without abdominal ultrasound. Ultrasound in senior pet’s annual or 2-yearly check should not be “luxury” but standard. Ultrasound 600-900 TL, takes 20 minutes, no sedation needed for your pet. Especially in dogs, internal bleeding from spleen rupture can be fatal; this check saves life.

9Weight, muscle mass and body condition score.

Scale tells the story of senior pet. Every 500 g lost matters; every kilo gained is burden on joints. Vet evaluates closeness to ideal weight with body condition score (BCS). “Sarcopenia” (muscle loss) should also be monitored separately in older animals — muscle loss directly affects function. High protein senior pet food, portion adjustment, gentle exercise are planned.

10Behavioral and cognitive assessment.

“Wanders at night,” “seems lost in the house,” “doesn’t respond like before” — these may not be “old age” but “cognitive dysfunction syndrome” (dog and cat dementia). Treatment exists: special foods, omega supplements, cognitive exercises, medication if needed. Tell vet behavioral changes in detail; keeping a journal helps a lot. Neglecting senior pet’s “soul” is as exhausting as neglecting body.

An old pet wants one thing from you: attention. Silvering fur, slightly longer afternoons in bed, softer appetite — all are normal parts of the road. But uninterruptedly doing the 10-step control above twice a year can offer Buddy 16 years instead of 12, in joy not in pain. Costs may seem high at first sight but become very small compared to treating a poorly progressing disease. Old age is not a fall but a more conscious companionship — a bit slower, but just as valuable.
