Cat FIV/FELV Test: 10 Facts You Need to Know

Pamuk is a two-year-old, lovable tabby you rescued from the neighborhood. At the vet examination, the doctor turns to you with a blood tube: “Should we also do FIV/FELV test?” Question marks in your mind: Is this test mandatory? Pamuk looks fine, why pay? But this single tube of blood can determine the next 10 years of Pamuk’s and if any, your other cats. Here are 10 facts every cat owner should know.

1FIV and FELV are two different viruses, should not be confused.

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) weakens immune system similarly to HIV in humans. FELV (Feline Leukemia Virus) attacks blood cells, causes lymphoma and anemia. Both are different retroviruses, different transmission routes, different courses. Tests are measured in same tube but results read separately. In Turkey, estimated about 8-12% of street-origin cats carry at least one — number not low.

2Test averages 400-700 TL in Turkey as of 2026.

Combined FIV/FELV rapid test (SNAP test) gives result in 10-15 minutes at vet clinics. Prices vary by city: 500-700 TL in Istanbul, 400-500 TL range in Anatolian provinces. Adoption cost, first vaccination package, neutering then making it feel like additional item — but result avoids saying “wish I had done it” for years. Some municipalities and animal welfare associations also organize free test campaigns, follow them.

3Test is absolutely essential if adopting street cat.

Picking up a kitten separated from mother on street and taking home is one of most beautiful stories — but also brings unknown past. FIV/FELV that may have passed from mother cat advances silently without showing symptoms in first months. If you have other cats at home, introducing new cat without testing is big risk. Let’s say at least 2-3 weeks quarantine plus testing is mandatory.

4False positive can occur in kittens.

In kittens younger than 8 weeks, FIV test can come positive due to antibodies from mother — but doesn’t mean virus has been transmitted. So international protocol: if kitten came positive, retest at 6 months. Then mother antibodies cleared, real situation emerges. FELV test reliable in kittens, this “waiting” rule not applied.

5FELV positive cats can develop aggressive diseases within years.

Course of FELV usually faster than FIV. Average lifespan of persistently positive FELV cat after diagnosis is around 2-3 years — however, early diagnosis, supportive treatment and stress-free life can extend this period. Lymphoma, bone marrow suppression, opportunistic infections most commonly seen complications. Still think “FELV=quick death” not, “process requiring special tracking.”

6FIV positive cats can live long and normal lives.

FIV diagnosis is not death sentence for a cat. A FIV+ cat well-fed, stress-free, living in indoor environment, going to vet checks twice a year, can live as long as FIV-negative cat — like 12-15 years. Mouth/dental infections, upper respiratory tract problems are more common because immunity is weak. But being positive = doesn’t immediately mean being bad.

7FIV transmits mainly through deep bite — not through shared bowl.

Primary transmission route of FIV is deep bites during fights. Virus barely passes between cats sharing same water bowl, same food bowl, same litter box. So two adult, neutered, non-fighting cats can live in same home — even one is FIV+ and other FIV-. Key condition: peaceful coexistence. FELV is opposite: can transmit through shared bowls, saliva, by licking.

8Vaccine exists for FELV, FIV not common currently.

FELV vaccine can be found in vet clinics in Turkey and especially recommended for outdoor cats. Test must be done before vaccine — because vaccinating already-positive cat doesn’t work. FIV vaccine exists in some countries but not common in Turkey and effectiveness debated. Best FIV protection: keeping cat away from fighting and neutering.

9Neutering reduces both FIV and FELV risk.

Unneutered male cats highest risk group for FIV because they fight during mating period. Neutered cats wander less, fight less, make less risky social contact. So equation “being pet owner = neutering” is not just population control, but directly a public animal health matter. Vet will definitely guide you on this.

10If multiple cats at home, definitely quarantine new cat.

If new cat coming to home that already has cat, scenario clear: minimum 2 weeks separate room quarantine + no introduction until FIV/FELV test comes negative. Introduction shouldn’t be sudden either, sniffing under door, toy exchange, short-supervised gradual. A week passing with assumption “looks fine anyway” can change Minnoş’s life at home. Quarantine annoying, but better than making irreversible mistake.
