A psychologist named Stanley Coren sought a systematic answer to this question in 1994 and published a “working/obedience intelligence” ranking covering 79 dog breeds in his study. This ranking is still an international reference point today. But “intelligence” is not just learning commands — there’s also instinctive and adaptive intelligence.
