15 Things You Need to Know Before Owning a Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever — that golden ball you can’t help smiling at when you see, can’t help burying yourself in fur. Unchanging chairman of “best family dog” lists on internet, social gossip bird that befriends three strangers in park in five minutes. But behind this sweet face is commitment as serious as buying house. Here are 15 facts you need to sit and discuss before bringing Golden Retriever home.

1Sheds fur. A lot. Much more than you calculated.

Golden Retriever’s double-layer coat sheds every day of year; in spring and autumn enters official period described as “fur season.” Your couch starts becoming gold-colored, finding fur in your food becomes routine, your robot vacuum clogs three times a week. Brushing at least 2-3 times a week, even more often in summer. Black-clothing lovers think.

2Madly in love with water.

Lake, stream, rain puddle, dishpan — doesn’t matter. Golden’s ancestors raised to retrieve hunters’ shot ducks from water; this instinct still alive. Wonderful if living by sea, but be ready to see Golden head-first dive into muddy puddle in middle of park.

3“Soft mouth” is real talent.

6Always want to carry something.

7Their exercise needs at serious level.

Requires daily at least 1-2 hours active exercise: running, ball throwing, swimming, socializing with other dogs. Strategy “15-minute walk in apartment, good Caramel home” doesn’t work in this breed. If exercise insufficient directs energy to walls, furniture and your psychology.

8Hip and elbow dysplasia risk real.

10Lifespan between 10-12 years.

Fate of large breeds: no matter how much you love them, don’t live as long as small breeds. Average 10-12 years, with good care and luck 13-14. Owning Golden means signing intensive 10-year love-responsibility contract. Prepare your time and your heart.

11Very prone to training — but food motivates a lot.

Golden, intelligent breed preferred as police dog, guide dog, search-rescue dog. “Sit, lie down, paw” done in 2-3 days. Problem: training rewards can easily turn into weight problem. Use small pieces, low-calorie rewards; discover applause and tone as reward.

12Their coats adapt to both cold and heat — but require care.

13Don’t behave like guard dog when see guest.
