Food Calculator
Calculate your dog's or cat's daily calorie needs and portion size based on weight, age, and activity level. With the vet-approved RER formula.
How does it work?
This calculator uses the international standard RER (Resting Energy Requirement)
uses the formula: RER = 70 × (kg)0.75
Then a multiplier is applied based on life stage, activity level, and neutering status MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) — that is, total daily calorie need — is found. The portion size is then converted to grams based on the kcal density of your pet food.
Important notice
This calculation healthy is a general guide for pets. In special situations such as pregnancy, lactation, weight loss diets, chronic illness, or post-surgical recovery, always consult your veterinarian. A dog/cat body is different for each individual — the ideal portion should be adjusted over time by monitoring weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many meals should I feed my pet per day?
For puppies and kittens 3-4 meals, adults 2 meals and for seniors, for digestive comfort 2-3 small meals is recommended. Giving a large portion at once increases the risk of bloat (gastric torsion) — especially in large breed dogs.
Is dry food or wet food better?
Both have their advantages. Dry food is beneficial for dental health and is more economical. Wet food increases fluid intake and is especially recommended for cats with kidney problems. A mixed diet (e.g. dry in the morning, wet in the evening) is a balanced option for most healthy pets.
Why does my neutered pet need fewer calories?
Metabolism after neutering is approximately %20-30 slows down and appetite may increase. Continuing with the same portion may quickly lead to weight gain. Our calculator automatically takes neutering status into account.
Can I trust the portion recommendations on the food package?
Package recommendations are generally highly active, not neutered is calculated for pets — meaning it's often too much for most house pets. We recommend calculating the actual need and comparing it with the package. You can adjust the portion in 10% increments by tracking your pet's weight weekly.
My cat/dog is gaining or losing weight, what should I do?
If gaining weight: reduce daily calories by 10% and monitor for 2 weeks. Also account for the total calories from treats — treats should not exceed 10% of daily calories. If losing weight: first have a vet check-up. Stress, dental issues, or hidden illnesses can cause weight loss.
