Cat Fall from a Height: First Aid in 7 Steps

Your cat may have fallen from your balcony, your window, or even the top of your wardrobe. Cat falls from heights are among the most common emergency cases in Turkey, known as “high-rise syndrome.” Although cats have an air-saving reflex (flip reflex), they sustain far more injuries than you might think. Even falls from the second or third floor can be fatal. Here are the 7 steps of first aid.

"1"Approach calmly and do not move.

Don’t immediately pick up Pamuk where you found him. If there’s a spinal injury, improper lifting can lead to permanent paralysis. First, observe the situation from 2–3 meters away: is he breathing? Is he conscious? Is there any bleeding? Are his legs in an abnormal position? If you can take a photo, do so—it’s useful information for the vet.

"2"Check their breathing and ensure their airway is clear.

Watch for the chest rising and falling. If they appear unable to breathe, gently tilt their head back and ensure their mouth is open—the tongue, blood, or vomit inside the mouth can block the airway. Check the color of their lips: are they healthy pink, or blue-gray? Blue-gray indicates an urgent need for oxygen; every minute counts.

"3"If there is bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth.

If there is visible bleeding (from the paw, ear, tongue, or mouth), apply continuous pressure with a clean towel or cloth for 5 minutes. Don’t lift the cloth to check if the bleeding has stopped—this disrupts clot formation. For arterial (pulsating, spurting) bleeding, apply a light tourniquet above the wound. This step must be done simultaneously with breathing; if you’re alone, ask a friend for help.

"4"Always use a hard surface for transport.

Gently slide Pamuk onto a flat, hard surface (cutting board, cardboard, or even a table). Do not lift him by his back or legs. Do not throw him directly into a box or shake him; spinal movement can worsen internal injuries. If you don’t have a ready-made transport bag at home, use a cardboard box wrapped in a clean towel. Minimizing movement is the top priority.

"5"Prevent heat loss — wrap in a blanket.

Cats in post-traumatic shock lose body heat rapidly. Wrap the body in a dry, warm blanket or towel (leave the head uncovered). When body temperature drops below 37°C, organ function slows down, making recovery more difficult. The blanket also restricts movement, which provides protection for the spine.

"6"Do not give anything by mouth—not even water.

Do not give Minnoş water out of concern that "he’s dehydrated." If the cat is unconscious, aspiration (fluid entering the lungs) can occur. If there is internal bleeding or emergency surgery is needed, an empty stomach is critical—anesthesia is safe on an empty stomach but risky on a full one. Follow the "zero oral intake" rule until you reach the veterinarian. No medication, vitamins, or snacks.

"7"GO TO THE VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY — the first 30 minutes are critical.

In cases of falls from heights, the first 30–60 minutes (“golden hour”) are critical. Internal bleeding, lung contusion, pneumothorax (air buildup in the chest), and bone fractures—none of these may be visible from the outside but can quickly become life-threatening. Call the nearest 24/7 vet clinic by phone and let them know you’re on your way. A cat that "looks fine" can be misleading.

A cat falling from a height is preventable, but when it happens, every second counts in an emergency. These 7 steps—when followed in order and calmly—can save a life. On the prevention side: safety netting on balconies (300–1,000 TL in Turkey, a lifetime investment), window guards, and arrangements to prevent climbing into closets.
